Well Justice Antonin Scalia got his turn on 60 Minutes yesterday, to discuss his life and career, and his new book "Making your case: The Art of Persuading Judges." In my view he was treated a bit harsher than his colleague, Justice Clarence Thomas, when he appeared on 60 Minutes a couple of months ago. See one of my earlier posts for links to those video clips.
"Nino" as he is referred to by his friends, in stark contrast with the public perception of himself, has a collegial relationship with the other members of the High Court. One of his closest friends on the Court is Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, one of the liberal standard-bearers of the Court. One of the interesting twists in the 60 Minutes piece is when commentator Lesly Stahl reveals that Justice Scalia has passed through some "down times" of quasi-depression on the court. She read excerpts from two letters that Scalia wrote to retired Justice Harry Blackmun in which he expressed frustration. Scalia looks visibly surprised...and notes that he had forgotten ever writing those letters. He then acknowledged growing tired of having to repeat himself in dissent after dissent.Posted below are the two video segments from 60 Minutes.
